The 100th Sheep

Message: The 100th Sheep

Text: Luke 15:1-7

Reach them or complain about them, but you can’t do both.

Bernard of Clairveaux:

1) Loving ourselves for our own sake.

2) Loving God for our own sake.

3) Loving God for God's sake.

4) Loving ourselves for God's sake.

For Jesus’ sake

Who is the next person for you to reach?

The next one.

N.T. Wright, “Extra words, especially strong ones, call into question the speaker’s basic truthfulness. If you need to add them, maybe we can’t trust you at all.”

George Sala, "It is difficult not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment."

Pause before you speak, so you can mean what you say.

Before you speak, ask yourself is it:

Truthful?

Helpful?

Inspiring?

Necessary?

Kind?

Put Jesus First

Message: Put Jesus First

Text: Matthew 6:33

Over your worries

Over your needs

Seek Him:

Some do

Some don’t

Some-times

William Law, “If you haven’t chosen the kingdom of God first, it will make no difference in the end what you have chosen instead.”

More Righteous than a Pharisee

Message: The Gospel According to Matthew

Text: Matthew 5:17-20

Are you more righteous than a pharisee?

There is:

Righteousness of the hands.

Righteousness of the heart.

Righteousness of doing.

Righteousness of being.

Luke 18:9-14

Christianity is one beggar showing another beggar where to find bread.

Matthew 14:30-31

Salt and Light

Message: The Gospel According to Matthew

Text: Matthew 5:13-16 (Msg)

Shake the salt and shine the light

You:

This is disciple’s work, there is no one else to do it.

Are:

You are not really ministering until you are ministering of yourself. You are not really giving until you are giving of yourself. You cannot separate yourself from your ministry…you are the ministry.

The:

There is no other salt, there is no other light. There is no other hope but Jesus.

John 14:6

Make a Difference

Message: The Gospel According to Matthew

Text: Matthew 5:10-12

Persecuted

Make a difference

If you are always the same as everyone around you, how can you make a difference?

Righteousness/holiness makes the unrighteous uncomfortable.

Your light exposes the darkness. In seeing you they see themselves.

For the serious disciple, Jesus is always preparing you for something, as you go from test to test.

Opposition produces: purifying, direction, focus, maturing (the opposite of petty)

With every little bit of difference you are making, comes the opportunity to make more difference.

Peacemaker

Message: The Gospel According to Matthew

Text: Matthew 5:9

Peacemaker

“Satan kindles the flames of contention then stands there and warms himself by the fire.”

Peace for you:

2 Corinthians 5:18

The affect the Holy Spirit in you has on others around you.

Peace for me:

1 Timothy 2:5

Romans 5:1

Colossians 1:20

Pure in Heart

Message: The Gospel According to Matthew

Text: Matthew 5:8

Pure in heart

A pure heart is more about the attitude than the action. Motive.

1 Samuel 16:7

Psalm 51:10

Mercy

Message: The Gospel According to Matthew

Text: Matthew 5:7

Mercy

Mercy is helping someone who may or may not deserve it. Or, withholding judgment from someone who may or may not deserve it.

This Christian life is about the journey, not just the destination.

Loss

Message: The Gospel According to Matthew

Text: Matthew 5:4 (The Message)

Loss

Mourning is grieving the loss of something or someone who has been taken from you somehow.

All mourning is painful, or it’s not really mourning. That is why Jesus offers comfort.

Job 1:21

You can refuse Jesus but you cannot lose Jesus.
